condenses
on the cold
surface of the coil and
drains away. What this means to you, is the
air is now cooler and drier making your home
more comfortable.
What
is SEER?
S.E.E.R. is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency
Ratio. Plain and simple this is the level
of efficiency that your unit will operate
at, the higher the number the more efficient
your unit is. The lowest level of efficiency
you can buy today is 10 S.E.E.R. however some
units can reach 18 S.E.E.R. when matched with
the proper components. Should I buy the highest
S.E.E.R. available? This depends on your budget
and how long you will be in your home. Higher
efficiency units cost more and there is period
of recuperation time in the energy savings.
When
replacing an older system, do you need to
replace your coil at the same time? This depends
on the age, size and condition of your current
coil. If you are looking to increase the S.E.E.R.
of your system you will have to change the
indoor coil to match the air conditioning
condenser. In this case the manufacturer has
designed the coil and air conditioner condenser
to work as a matched system.
Are
you adding Air Conditioning to your home?
If you currently have a warm air system with
ducts, air conditioning can usually be added
quickly and easily. There may need to be some
modifications made to your ductwork to make
sure that you have adequate airflow. If you
are installing your new cooling unit on an
older furnace you may need to increase the
blower size to help force the air through
your home. If this is the case you may want
to consider replacing your older furnace as
well, this way you now the system will be
matched to operate with maximum efficiency
and comfort.
If
your home is heated with a boiler and radiators
or electric baseboard heat this will take
a little longer. There are now three main
ways of adding air conditioning to your home.
| The
traditional system of adding an air
conditioner, air handler and ductwork
is the most common, provided that you
have room to run the ductwork it usually
is the lowest priced option. The next
is a high velocity system. This system
runs small |
|
diameter duct throughout your home
to offer the least intrusion of space.
Another option is called a mini-split
system; in this style there are multiple
air handlers that would be mounted
in key areas of the home and an air
conditioning condenser outside. This
type of system is commonly used when
neither style of ductwork can be run
through the house.
